Awesome finds, Moving In

My husband is a genius

Yes, he is…a DIY genius.

Excuse me for a minute, while I help Mark squeeze his BIG head through the door…his ego is swelling with this post. 🙂

I’m not good at visualizing things, but Mark has said for months that putting that old elevator door on the ceiling would be awesome. He was right.

image

Mark did it all in one day. I went to work with a huge hole in my living room ceiling.

image

When I came home, Mark had the door up and put some old Christmas lights behind it so I could “see” his vision.

image

I love it. We’re going to swap out the hinges with gas pipe and use “LED light tape” instead of Christmas lights. I think the final product will be spectacular! It’s worth saying again…my husband is a genius!

One of a kind

I swear my husband, Mark, has the golden touch when it comes to this home renovation stuff.

Not only is he re-doing the entire house from the studs up…but he’s finding the COOLEST stuff to put in it. Case in point —>

image

Mark picked up this old elevator door that used to be in a saw mill near 60th Street in Lawrenceville.

A local artist who takes “throwaway pieces” and refurbishes them couldn’t figure out what to do with this door and was giving it away.

Mark immediately thought that we could put it on the downstairs ceiling, wire lighting around it and use it as a feature piece. I also saw this picture on Houzz.

image

I love that they did a big art piece above the fireplace. Maybe we’ll do something like that with the elevator door instead of using it as a light.

By the way, if you’ve never been to Houzz.com is it AMAZING. You can search pictures by room, decor, style…it’s a great place to go for decorating ideas!

The beauty of a Pittsburgh toilet

If you’re from Pittsburgh, you totally know what I’m talking about.

For those of you who are foreigners 🙂 the Pittsburgh toilet is a very strange phenomenon of a free standing toilet in the BASEMENT with no walls or doors to speak of.

image

To be honest with you, I think Pittsburgh toilets are weird and gross. And then, a few days ago while working on the house, I needed to go to the bathroom. You’ll remember we ripped out the bathroom several weeks ago…

image

And so, I went down to the basement and used the Pittsburgh toilet which I now have a new affinity for. An added bonus…

image

Our Pittsburgh toilet has a pencil sharpener next to it, because everyone knows you need a sharp pencil when filling out crossword puzzles on the can! 🙂

Won’t you be my neighbor?

Everybody knows that neighbors can make or break you.

We got lucky (my mom would say blessed) to have absolutely terrific neighbors who are kind, helpful and friendly.

Many of them grew up in Lawrenceville and a few of them are young families that just moved in.

Our neighbors have made us sandwiches while we work…

image

They’ve helped us TRY to move some huge appliances into the house (more on that later)…

image

They’ve passed a few cold ones through the fence on a hot Saturday…

image

And they don’t get mad when we have a second dumpster delivered.

image

One of life’s perks is having awesome neighbors who look out for you and your home. I think my mom is right…the Man Upstairs plopped us right in the middle of some really great people. 🙂

Life coming full circle

Me and my dear ol’ dad…

image

We’ll never be able to repay him for all the help he’s given us with our Lawrenceville house.

IMG_0655

It’s kind of a déjà vu for him because a LONG time ago he used to be an electrician for the city of Pittsburgh and he worked on the traffic lights in Lawrenceville.

image

That’s his old toolbox he used. It still has the old color code for the lights taped to the inside.

image

Now, Mark and I are using his old tools to renovate our house…most recently, we needed his old ratchet set to fasten some of the bolts into our new ceiling joists.

image

Who would have thought that 35 years later, we’d be back in my dad’s old stomping grounds renovating our new house and eating his favorite Frankie’s hot dogs off Butler Street?! 🙂

Treasures in an old house & whiskey. Yes, whiskey.

We uncover little things every day. Actually, some of the things aren’t so little…

image

That is my mammoth freezer. It’s so old, it has drawers. Check it out…

image

Next to my insanely large freezer is my equally enormous fridge.

image

It is also really old, really LOUD and it’s a power hog.

They’re kinda cool but they’re too big for our narrow kitchen and so my friend, Abby, is going to take the fridge and we’re working on someone else to take the freezer.

Here’s one thing I’m not giving away…

image

We found this old wooden drawer made out of whiskey crates in our basement.

image

Why does my finger look so old and wrinkly?!! Anyway, there’s a bunch of handmade work benches and tables down there…whoever owned the house, waayyyyy back when, built these drawers and used whatever materials they had handy.

image

I guess our previous, previous, previous owner REALLY liked a stiff drink. (And I will need one when we finally finish). Cheers!

We haven’t found gold, but we did find these…

Everyone thinks that when they demo an old house, they’re going to find money and piles of gold in some secret, hidden passageway.

Each time I swing the hammer, I’m hoping to hit the jackpot. (Hasn’t happened yet)

We did find some old newspapers that were stuck in the brick…a couple of old wallpaper sheets that covered the fireplace (who wallpapers a fireplace?!)…and a really nasty rug that covered part of the bathroom floor (I will you spare you the details on that.)

We also found this GEM…

magnet

An old Channel 11 magnet with Peggy, David and Chris Long – how great is this?!

I’d say my co-workers looked good back then and look even better now! I guess we were meant to get the house…I take this magnet as sort of an omen. 🙂
