A “Spiritual Medium” Used To Live In Our House

We thought our old Victorian might have been a funeral home at one time because of the large front rooms, super high ceilings and wide interior hallway. But it’s better than that…a spiritual medium named Mrs. Heiny used to live in our house and did readings for people from 1903 to 1905.

How cool is that?! I am obsessed with a show on E! called “Tyler Henry Hollywood Medium” and I think it is so freaking cool that Mrs. Heiny was doin’ her thang in our house.

All of this information comes from a “house history” that we asked historian Carol Peterson to do. She dug up everything she could on the house.

24 people owned the house before us. The first people who lived there were Theodore and Elizabeth Peterson in 1879. Theodore was a teamster and his family was in Pittsburgh politics.

The house was built between 1872 and 1876 in the Italianate style of architecture which was the most popular style in Pittsburgh at that time.

Italiante homes in America are modeled after Italian villas and farmhouses. This helps us GREATLY because now we know exactly what the house was intended to look like and we can mirror that as much as possible.

Mark and I LOVE going through our house history and recommend anyone who’s interested to get one done on their home!

Cigarettes, Sidewalks & Exclamations!

At dinner the other night, we swear Henry said his first word. And we’re pretty sure it sounded like “Nicorette.” HA!

No idea why he even has smoking words in his vocabulary.

Over the weekend, Mark and I went to an adults only dinner party and left Henry at home for the 2nd time in 7 months. Win!

Our new sidewalk was installed with spaces for our shade trees that we’ll plant to line the street. Yes!

We found a guy to help Mark make traditional box gutters that will help restore the house to its original, historic glory. Woohoo!

Henry helped his Dad take measurements for the outdoor patio off the kitchen. Yay!

Momma was down for the count and in bed with a nasty fever for 2 days. Boo!

The only good thing was I got to stare at one of my favorite prints of baby Hank.

Look at that superman…can’t believe he was ever that small! Thanks Melissa Lucci for the photo!

Vacation and poop…like LOTS of poop.

We’ve been away from the blog for a hot minute because we’ve been living life…and taking care of a 7-month-old who is a VERY busy boy!

A few weeks ago, we took Henry to Toronto to see his cousins…

He loved every minute of the trip including when he blew out his diaper in the car and had poop all over him and the car seat.

Mark and I laughed and laughed as we cleaned him in the middle of a Tim Horton’s parking lot….hahaha!!!

Hank the Tank is quite the traveler and LOVED the Jersey Shore last week!

He loved the ocean, the sun and sand…even when he ate a handful of it.

Best. Kid. Ever.

A life lesson Mark and I learned very quickly last week…vacationing with a 7-month-old is NOT relaxing.

Thankfully, we were there with family and friends who helped out so that Mark and I could drink a beer…or two.

It’s all back to work now…and back to working on the new house…which will feel like a vacation compared to vacationing with my favorite Chubba Bubba!

I Can See Clearly Now!

Because the old windows are gone!!

Our new windows were installed last week and it honestly feels like a completely different house.

My ever-stylish husband decided black windows would be best.

Once again, his eye for design is spot-on. The windows look terrific!

I don’t have a great front shot of the house because we’re still doing some work there…but the big beauty shot is coming in the next few weeks!

Hank the Tank was super jazzed about the new windows.

His excitement only lasted for about 3 minutes because he promptly fell right asleep!

Apparently, our renovations bore him. HA! 🙂

Watch Your Mouth!

My sweet boy is googling and gurgling and making all sorts of sounds as he tries to figure out how to talk!

While this is amazing, it’s also giving me major anxiety because I have a horrible mouth…as in, I could make a sailor blush. 🙂

I am not proud (and I know my mother is mortified by this) and I am working on it, but the other night while we were playing with Hank the Tank and rolling around on the floor…I spilled my wine glass.

Guess what? Red wine STAINS! And Momma unleashed a fiery, profanity-laced tirade.

I am praying to God that Hank’s first word is Mama or Dada or anything but what he heard in that moment! Ahhhhh!!!

Since I just gave you a wonderful example of poor parenting, I’m going to have my sister, Kelly, chime in as well…because it’s nice to know that she’s not perfect either. 😉

Hey everyone! This is Kelly and I’m going to tell you how my 2-year-old plays “titties.”

Tickle. That’s what she means. TICKLE.

Don’t go thinking we teach our toddler body terminology that our adult friends don’t even say…

Her daddy tickles her back with his beard. It’s their little game before bed time. He tickles her back — She “titties” his arms and neck.

The problem is…she gets really excited and playful around kids, so she yells at the playground that she wants to “play titties.”

I know how that sounds.

But just smile like we do and move on. 🙂

Daddy’s Little Sidekick

Guess where Mark and Henry spend most of their father-son bonding time?

Yep, you guessed it…Home Depot, Lowe’s and Busy Beaver.

Hank the Tank loves going to the hardware store with his dad…at least that’s what we think. We’ll continue to drag him there until he starts to talk and tells us otherwise. 🙂

Mark is prepping our Victorian house this weekend for the new windows that are coming.

My dad is going to help, and those two will have some “guy time” which consists of donut and hot dog breaks between working. Ha!

Awesome throwback pic of Mark’s beard!!

Henry and I will be hanging together which is our very favorite thing to do.

And I don’t care if people think I share too many pictures of my baby…how can I not? LOOK AT THAT FACE!!

Mark will only go on a family walk beer is involved.

Yep…that’s what my husband wants, so that’s what my husband gets!

Thankfully, we live in Lawrenceville where the number of breweries and bars is endless, so we have many, many options. 🙂

To be fair, I also love our new family ritual.

Every night, we put Hank in the Rolls Royce of strollers and go for a nice, hour-long walk through the neighborhood.

Sometimes we stop for a drink at the beginning…sometimes, we grab a beer after.

So far, Hank the Tank has been to Grapperia, Franktuary, Industry, The Abbey, Full Pint Brewing, New Amsterdam, Roundabout Brewery and Dive Bar and Grill.

Everyone always loves these sweet cheeks. Hank might be the hippest boy in town. 🙂
