The Row House

Give the artists their space!

Kinda loved sipping wine on a scaffold admiring the handiwork of someone else!

Totally posing here.

We are living the DIY life, but sometimes you gotta call in backup.

And backup comes in the form of Shawn.

home and renovation

Shawn is an artist.  He taped the drywall and did all the mudding and finishing for us in our back bedroom.

We felt it was the best use of our time (and money!)…Mark and I hung the drywall (easy!) and Shawn saved us from headaches…and shoulder aches.

Sometimes, you just need to spend a couple hundred bucks for your sanity!

Excuse me while I cry…

Not sure if it’s the holidays or my hormones, but I literally teared up the other day as Mark worked on our upstairs bedroom.

As I wrote this blog post, he carried all the insulation and drywall upstairs.

IMG_1974

He cut the fluffy pink stuff and filled all the cracks and crannies

IMG_1978

Then, Marky Mark rented himself a lift and started hanging…but not before I made him pose.

IMG_1989

Drywall is heavy and cumbersome, and this skinny Canadian handles it like it’s nothing.

IMG_1990

All he asked me to do in return that day was make him a sandwich. (I went out and bought him one…same thing.)

Ladies, when your man spends his weekend finishing your house and says that your butt looks nice in those yoga pants as you take blog pictures…you betta cry ’cause the good Lord sent you a KEEPER!

He’s BACK!!!!!!!!

I missed this face.

image

After spending the last 5 weeks doing some VERY COOL work in Dubai, my husband is back in the states and back in my arms! 🙂

Mark was still in the loop on all the house stuff. We Skyped with my favorite drywaller so that Mark could see what he was doing.

image

Drywaller Mark also gave Hubby Mark some tips for next time.

image

Since Dubai is 9 hours ahead of us, when I got home from work, Mark was just starting his day. When I woke up in the morning, Mark was wrapping things up at his Dubai office.

image

We Skyped pretty much every day. Now that’s he back and has major jet lag, we’re spending the next few days relaxing.

Renovating can wait. 🙂

Amazed. Totally Amazed.

I am completely blown away by my drywall finisher, Mark.

image

What he can do with a bucket of mud while on stilts is an art form.

image

Drywaller Mark mudded and taped our downstairs walls and ceilings…fixed some of the finishing work that was already done…and had the whole thing sanded and perfect in about a day and a half.

image

He also put up plastic to minimize the dust from the sanding.

I know this is a DIY blog, but the best thing I’ve done so far is write this man a check. 🙂

My knight in shining stilts!

My knight in shining armour did not arrive on a horse, but on stilts.

image

Meet Mark. Not my husband, Mark, but my drywall finisher.

He is the best thing to happen to me this week.

image

Drywall Mark started early Tuesday morning and the hardest thing I did all day was make him a cup of coffee.

image

He is fast, precise and perfect. Drywall Mark gets more done in 5 minutes than my Hubby Mark and I get done in a day.

Why oh why did I not bring him in sooner?!!! 🙂

Boss Lady got this thing on lock!

I met with my drywall finisher yesterday. Not only was he terrific, but it turns out that he is friends with my cousin.

Pittsburgh is such a small town…there are always connections!!

Anyway, I felt very FANCY and IMPORTANT during this meeting while explaining our renovation project.

I told Mark he doesn’t have to worry…I’ve got this project (like my dance moves) on lock.

image

Didn’t know I was such a good dancer, did ya? You should see Mark…

image

I like to imagine myself as Beyonce. And she’s a TOTAL Boss Lady, so I think I could get used to this lead renovator position. 🙂

We’re supposed to get started next week. Can’t wait to show you the progress!

My 1st order of business

As the newly minted LEAD RENOVATOR of our DIY home renovation project, my first order of business was to put on my Boss Lady glasses.

image

No doubt who’s in charge now, huh Mark?!

My second order of business was to call my Aunt Trudy. Aunt Trudy is married to Uncle Warren and Uncle Warren knows everyone. He’s the guy who hooked us up with our electrician, Dominic. Dominic is now part of our family, and Mark is on his weekly bowling team. 🙂

Uncle Warren put me in touch with someone who can come in and help me finish the drywall on our first floor. We’re supposed to meet early this week.

Look out…Boss Lady Courtney is ready to get. things. done.

image

And don’t be giving me any flack for needing some help. I am not as handy as my husband…he’s a freak of nature.

Shoulda Coulda Woulda

We’ve got déjà vu fever at our house…the mudding and taping and sanding is back!

image

That means Mark’s rotator cuff injury has reared its ugly head once again.

Pop a few Motrin, drink a couple of Heinekens and he’s good to go!

image

There’s not as much drywall downstairs, but the ceiling is a bear.

Time is of the essence because Mark will be very busy work-wise when the new year starts, and we might only get to work on the house 1 day a week.

image

That combined with the fact that we are DYING to take a beach vacation (and I already got a pedicure for that very purpose) means we should be like busy renovation bees…key word here is SHOULD.

Welcome to our treehouse

This blog is a judgement-free zone. Keep that in mind as I share with you the current state in which we live.

image

Our stairs are gone. They were only temporary and my husband, Mark, took them down to finish mudding and taping all the drywall downstairs.

image

So, how am I supposed to get upstairs??

Remember, you promised to withhold judgement. Here is my husband’s solution…

image

Yep, that’s a ladder and that’s how I get to my bedroom, bathroom and laundry room. If it SOUNDS and LOOKS awkward, it’s even MORE AWKWARD to LIVE like this.

Here I am with all my work bags just climbing the ladder.

image

And here is my view in the morning as I try to get to the kitchen for a cup of coffee.

image

It’s like we’re living in a treehouse…or a fort.

I feel like I have been a VERY patient wife through all of these DIY renovations, but if this “ladder thing” lasts more than a few days I will definitely throw a fit.

Shame works wonders

A public shaming can work wonders.

In my last blog, I lifted the veil and revealed that the hubs and I would rather sit and watch TV than finish our downstairs.

There was no hidden meaning…it was only a truth I was sharing with the universe.

Mark took it as a dig, and he’s been working on the downstairs like a mad man ever since.

Totally fine by me. 🙂

Several months ago, we told you about this old elevator door we found that used to be in a mill in Lawrenceville.

image

Mark decided it should hang from the ceiling with LED light strands behind it to give the room a “glow.”

image

That means taking down the drywall we already put up and installing hooks into the ceiling beams so the door can hang from there.

image

1 step back, 2 steps forward…repeat it with me…1 step back, 2 steps forward!
