The Grand House

It’s Ugly But It’s PROGRESS!

I know we all prefer to look at pretty pictures, but SO MUCH of the home renovation process is ugly.

To us, the ugly pictures mean PROGRESS!

We had a company come in this week and put spray foam insulation through the whole house.

We felt it was the best decision in terms of energy saving costs for heating and cooling a home of this size.

Now that the spray foam is in, we have a little bit more of electrical work to complete and then we’ll be able to drywall!

I remember when the drywall went in at our first renovation, it just really made us feel that we were getting close to the end!

Only 1 thing to do when you’re snowed in…work on your house!

This weekend was spent keeping people up to date on the snow storm for my real job and drinking hot tea with honey and bourbon..the best!

Mark and I also used #SnowStormJonas as the perfect excuse to stay in and work on our house!

(Ya’ll knew we were gonna work on it any way.)

First…sustenance.

Not the prettiest...but good!

Not the prettiest…but good!

Yes, I cooked. (Shocking!)

I made Mark a three egg omelet with meat and cheese, then promptly announced that I will not make breakfast again for probably 3 months.

Remember the orange blobs (aka spray foam) that we put in all the nooks and crannies in our exposed brick?

We shaved off the front and threw those pieces away. Doesn’t it look like teeny tiny sweet potatoes?!

how do I spray foam my house

I’m VERY HAPPY to say that it doesn’t look that bad!

how to chip plaster off brick

Looks good, huh?

You actually can’t even really see the spray foam…it blends in perfectly with our pumpkin colored brick.

what to do with a brick fireplace

Success!

Dontcha just love when life works out like that?!

Do not lick the orange foam!

Not that I thought anyone would…I just wanted to go on the record saying that.

Even though we insulated the hell out of The Rowhouse…and most rooms are toasty warm…we still feel a few drafts.

Look at that concentration!

Look at that concentration!

We did a very scientific test (ha!) and found that our back bedroom is about five degrees cooler than the rest of the house.

This means we can only have people sleep over who are warm-blooded or who are willing to sleep in their snowsuits.

(Let’s get real, the only person who’s sleeping over is Niece Lily and she will sleep with me while Mark takes the couch.)

To help with the drafts, Mark went around and spray-foamed all the nooks and crannies.

Yes, our Christmas tree is still up...don't judge!

Yes, our Christmas tree is still up…don’t judge!

Since we live in an old brick house, there are basically a million.

Once the foam dries, Mark will shave off the front and paint it gray so it looks like mortar.

Doesn't it look like orange goo?!

Doesn’t it look like orange goo?!

I hope that works, otherwise people will walk in and think “What are those weird orange blobs all over their house?!”

Don’t let the warm weather fool you!

Yes, it was 70 degrees last weekend, but we know we’re gonna get socked with some winter weather soon!

IMG_1946

That means we MUST insulate the back bedroom in The Rowhouse.

IMG_1951

My man loves nothing more than a weekend full of insulating. (Insert maniacal laugh here!)

IMG_1952

We thought this task was going to be difficult and tedious because of the small spaces and awkward corners, but it went smoothly and quickly!

IMG_1954

Once we finished, our favorite girl came over for a visit!

IMG_1962

Babygirl Lily wants to walk. Forget crawling, this girl is ready to run around the block!

After two hours of fawning over her and clapping at every little thing she did, Niece Lily gave us a smile that can only mean one thing…

Heavy lifting, Moving In

It…won’t…fit…

There’s a reason why contractors and roofers and electricians have trucks. You can fit A LOT of stuff in a truck. Not so much with a Volvo…

No matter how much Mark pushed and pulled…

image

That insulation did not want to fit! You’d think because it’s soft and squishy, you could smash it into any small space.

image

After several attempts (and several weird looks from people walking by) we got the insulation in the car and headed home. But, first, a necessary stop…

How would we know it’s the holidays without Starbucks? Seriously, I look so forward to their Christmas cups…I drank with two hands because of my excitement. 🙂

We passed inspection!!!

Hallejuah, praise the Lord! Mark and I have been waiting for this day!

The city inspector came and signed off on all the electrical work. That means we can start putting drywall EVERYWHERE. We started with insulation first.

Mark is using Safe’n’Sound for the bathroom. It’s fire resistant and sound proof.

insulation 2

We don’t want everyone hearing our bathroom/shower business and this insulation will absorb all that. When you come over, the only thing you will hear is the sound of my Spotify or NPR. 🙂

The bathroom is almost finished and then we’ll do our bedroom.

Mark put up a metal stud wall and will put foam board insulation in each column. My brother-in-law is leaving his CUSHY corner office job in the Great White North to help us this weekend. We’ll see if he’s cut out for this DIY stuff!
