The Grand House

Looks like Mom…Wants to be Dad!

Henry might have blond hair and blue eyes like his Momma, but I think he’s going to be like his Dad.

He loves to watch Mark work on the house and always wants to touch his tools!

Mark put in a new downspout the other day and Henry just stared at him the whole time.

Good thing our little Tank likes to help because we’re going to need it!

In the next few weeks, we’re getting a new roof, expanding the 3rd floor dormers and (hopefully!) working on a new kitchen design. These are a few different looks we like.

Henry is also babbling nonstop and gearing up to say his first word…wonder if it will be Dewalt! Ha!

How to live through a kitchen remodel without getting divorced.

People always ask if Mark and I fight during our renovations…and we almost never do.

Look at us…so in love…(Mark had like 5 beers before this was taken.)

image

We sometimes get a bit testy about halfway through any project, but we haven’t had any big blowups.

I think it works for us because we always know that every project will take longer than planned and will likely cost a few more bucks than we allotted.

Knowing this up front saves a lot of anger and frustration when we’re a month past our original “end” date and have thrown an extra $500 at the project.

Since we live in the home as we renovate, we are meticulous about keeping a SUPER clean work space.

I can thank my husband for this one. He is OCD about having his tools organized and put away and cleaning up the work space every single time. Even when we were in the heaviest demo phase…we always swept up the work space at the end of the day.

home renovation ideas

It just helps with your sanity. When your house is a mess and looks junky…you feel awful.

The last piece of advice we’d give to couples who renovate together is…drink some alcohol.

My husband is way more pleasant after 3 Heinekens. 🙂

We can’t just buy a light…that would be WAY too easy!

There is a power struggle that exists between Mark and I when it comes to DIY-ing EVERYTHING in our home.

home renovation ideas

If he had his way, Mark would sketch, design and build EVERY. SINGLE. ITEM. in our house.

He would rather live without any light fixtures for a year if it meant that he could take 12 months to craft every single one.

kitchen remodel

I refuse to let him do this, but I had to budge a little when he said his latest idea could be done in a day.

He bought some gas pipe from Home Depot, an Edison bulb and a lamp shade from IKEA.

home renovation ideas

A few hours later, we had our own industrial light fixture above the café table in the kitchen.

home renovation ideas

I almost hate to admit it, but Mark was right…the light is perfect!

It’s much softer than our overhead fixture and I love it in the mornings when I come down to make a cup of tea…I think of my sweet husband every time I turn it on. 🙂

The kitchen of my dreams from the man of my dreams!

Please tell me you rolled your eyes when you read that title.

I did too.

Now, let’s move on.

I. Love. My. Kitchen!!!!!!!!!!!!!

home improvement ideas

There are not enough exclamation points for me to get across the level of excitement I am feeling.

kitchen remodel

From the butcher block countertop, to the white farm sink, to the chic gray cabinets, to the above-the-range microwave…this kitchen is EVERYTHING and is making me seriously think about cooking.

(Yeah right.)

home improvement ideas

My favorite husband, Mark, once again proved his worth a million times over by installing this kitchen by himself with some help from his very pregnant wife.

Here’s what the kitchen looked like when we bought the house and what it looks like now.

home improvement ideas

Next time, I’ll show you the other side with our open pantry, leaning shelves and cafe table.

This whole kitchen remodel took us about two months longer than anticipated, but it was worth the wait!

Gray All Day!

Oh my friends…my new kitchen is giving me ALL THE FEELS!!!

Favorite husband, Mark, worked every night after his real job to assemble the cabinet drawers.

kitchen remodel

He is now a pro at assembling anything IKEA, and you should call him when you buy stuff from there.

The gray cabinet fronts went up easily.

kitchen remodel

After that, we hung the wall cabinets.

kitchen remodel

That went SUPER quickly because, with IKEA, you screw a metal rail into the wall (make sure to hit the studs!) and then hook your cabinets onto the rail and just move them back and forth until you get them where you want them.

home renovation ideas

Genius.

home renovation ideas

We bought an over-the-range microwave to save counter space.

home renovation ideas

Mark installed it perfectly to make sure it vented properly so we don’t burn down the house.

home renovation ideas

Next up…art work! And the light fixture that just arrived! It’s coming together!

A kitchen so nice, I might actually use it!

Mark and I are at the point in our kitchen remodel where the heavy lifting is done.

What we’re doing now is mostly cosmetic, and it makes me so EXCITED!!!

home renovation ideas

Look at that farm sink! With the butcher block counter top!

My poor family must endure several texts like this throughout the day as each piece is installed. They humor me…out of love…and text me back saying they love it too. 🙂

A quick rewind to show you how we got the base cabinets secured and level.

home renovation ideas

Mark then hooked up the water lines to the sink and to the dishwasher. (It took him all day, and he was very sweaty by the end, but it was a success!)

The birch butcher block came in one long piece. Mark cut it to fit and then we used butcher block conditioner to protect it.

home renovation ideas

A girl with this exact counter top recommended it to us…it’s a combination of beeswax and mineral oil and it’s supposed to keep spills and stains from being absorbed into the wood.

kitchen remodel

We’ll put all the fronts on the cabinets next…we’re both really jazzed about the gray color we picked.

kitchen remodel

I think it looks clean and modern and chic!

Pregnant lady down…dad to the rescue!

Our kitchen is THISCLOSE to being done!

And since I’m dealing with some pretty bad back pain during these last 3 months of pregnancy, I’m out of the mix right now.

So, Mark called my dad and they painted our kitchen. I think he prefers him anyway. 😉

kitchen remodel

We love PPG Paints and we used the color “Shark.”

It’s a very light gray that’s a step above white, and it has a clean finish that looks super modern.

Progress pictures are my favorite…

Here’s the kitchen at the beginning, during the demo stage and at the present.

The FINISHED pictures will be much more WOW…I promise! 🙂
