My grandmother told me I needed another MAN

If you’ve been reading this blog for awhile, you know that my husband is a MASTER home renovator…except when it comes to door frames.

image

The first time Mark built a door frame for our bedroom, he ended up throwing things and cursing the sky and I had to get out of there because it was ridiculous. (Relive that episode HERE)

You would think it would be different this time when Mark tried to build the frame for the front door. Wrong you are. First, he got hurt…

image

Then we bought the wrong size wood for the frame.

We shared our frustrations with my Nunny who quickly said, “Can’t you just look this up on the internet?” and “Courtney, get a man in there to help him.”

image

There it was. My boss lady/awesome/cool/feminist grandmother told me I needed another MAN to help.

She. Was. Right.

Our electrician, St. Dominic, came over and he and Mark figured out the door frame dilemma in 15 minutes.

We should always listen to our grandmothers. Always. 🙂

As my Nunny would say, “We were closer to heaven.”

Our roof work took a full two days. We had to run back to the store for more “ice and water shield” and we took our time with the project because we didn’t want to fall off.

image

As I mentioned before, it was slightly nerve wracking to be that high off the ground but I got used to it (and actually liked it) pretty quickly.

My very wise Nunny would say it was all good because on the roof we were closer to heaven!

image

After we covered the roof with the waterproof shield, Mark nailed down the edges.

image

He then took a bucket of tar to close up all the edges and to seal the nailheads so no water will seep through there.

image

We were pretty proud of ourselves by the end.

image

To make it even better, look what we found on the top of one of our chimneys!

image

My parents say it’s an old Pittsburgh bus route sign. The previous homeowner used it to cover the top of the chimney. We want to take it down and use it as art piece — isn’t it cool?!

Why. Grandmas. Rock.

I don’t think my 83-year-old Nunny really “gets” why we would want to live in a narrow rowhouse in Lawrenceville when we could get a normal-sized house in the suburbs with a 2 car garage.

Every time I show her a picture like this…

image

She kind of gets a look on her face that says her inner monologue is going “Ewwwwwwww!”

That said, my Nunny is a saint and she wants to be supportive.

Since ripping down walls, sawing through pipes and scraping off plaster is a bit much for her, she did the next best thing….

Nunny gave us our FIRST housewarming gift. It’s a beautiful painting she did herself…my husband almost cried when she gave it to him. 🙂

A ski getaway with friends

HAPPY FRIDAY!!! Dontcha just love Fridays??? I always get a boost knowing I have a fun, relaxing weekend right within reach. I’ve been trying to bounce back from a cold/flu that’s taking forever to shake off. Super jazzed to get some extra rest this weekend and hopefully at least one good workout.

I spent the last weekend skiing with friends at Holiday Valley in New York. Note the pic of me with my best blondes. 🙂

And one with the hubby.

Unfortunately, one of my friends had to jet out early because she got a call that her grandma was in the hospital and they were going to have to say their final goodbyes. It got me thinking that those of us who still have our grandparents are the LUCKIEST sons-of-a-guns in the world…my own Nunny, who is sassy and fantastic, is one of the greatest women I have ever known.
image
And so, a big hug to my friend who did lose her grandma, and a big virtual hug to all of you who don’t have yours anymore. May we always remember how BLESSED we are to have Gram & Gramps in our lives (even if it was for a short time.)

I’ve started a blog, yowza.

I know it’s 2014 and everyone and their mother has a blog, so I might be late to the party but I finally showed up. I’ve been reading a lot of health and fitness blogs over the past year and I LOVE them…I can’t get enough. And so one day while I was running, I thought to myself “I could TOTALLY start my own blog and share my experiences!” (Isn’t funny how when you’re running and the endorphins are going, every idea you have seems like the best idea ever?!)

Anyway, I have no idea if anyone will read this blog or care what I have to say, but life is about trying new things and taking on challenges that scare you, right??

So today, I’m putting away my Christmas decorations, taking my Nunny and Pap to dinner and starting a blog. Boom.
