Pregnant lady down…dad to the rescue!

Our kitchen is THISCLOSE to being done!

And since I’m dealing with some pretty bad back pain during these last 3 months of pregnancy, I’m out of the mix right now.

So, Mark called my dad and they painted our kitchen. I think he prefers him anyway. 😉

We love PPG Paints and we used the color “Shark.”

It’s a very light gray that’s a step above white, and it has a clean finish that looks super modern.

Progress pictures are my favorite…

Awful weather…perfect for painting

Mark and I housed this AMAZING meal at Dish Osteria on the South Side on Friday night.

the best places to eat in Pittsburgh

You must go to this place…it’s like being in Italy!

Stuffed to the gills…and with negative wind chills…we stayed inside and tackled the second (AND FINAL!) coat of paint in our back bedroom.

Mark attacked the ceiling and then all the window trim.

We pride ourselves on a neat and tidy workspace, but this is the truth of what home renovations really look like!

The baby’s room

This will be the baby’s room…I know, I know…we don’t have a baby.

what to paint a baby's room

I’m hoping if I put the whole “baby thing” into the universe, we will have a baby to put in this room.

And so we must get it ready.

priming a wall

Mark and I primed the walls and ceiling on Saturday morning.

My dad came over that afternoon and painted.

best way to paint a room

My dad is meticulous and likes to listen to talk radio while he works. He also brings his own newspapers.

We had niece Lily over and she approved of the “baby room”…and of Lawrenceville in general.

Tiger Lily said she didn’t mind the hipsters!

Moving In

The devil is ice skating.

It’s as cold in hell as it is in Pittsburgh because the unimaginable just happened.

My mother got a cellphone. Her very first one.

image

I immediately received her first selfie (with her favorite people).

This occasion deserves a PARADE…I’m currently scouting locations. 🙂

On the home front, Mark and I are painting this weekend and hope to refinish the downstairs floors in about 2 weeks. We are very excited.

I also taught my first spin class.

Orange is the new black

“Orange is the New Black” is the coolest, hottest show on Netflix…and we have the coolest, hottest wall in the ‘Burgh.

image

That is 100% our opinion. Feel free to disagree. 🙂

My husband, Mark, LOVES the color orange, and I once had a makeup artist tell me that it was my color. (I immediately went to the mall and bought like 10 orange tops.)

image

Using good ol’ Google, I read a bit about what the color orange means. One website said “the color orange radiates warmth and happiness.” Good. I’m ALL about happiness and warmth in this house.

image

The article went on to say that “Orange offers emotional strength in difficult times. It helps us to bounce back from disappointments and despair.” Another bonus. Now, when life presents us with challenges, Mark and I will just plop ourselves in front of this wall and cry and hug each other.

But, the number one reason why we love our orange wall is because Mark’s family is Dutch and we think it’s very appropriate to have a wall dedicated to Holland in our home!

I picked our paint color because of Touchdown Jesus

We’re at that stage where we’re ready to paint the upstairs walls. While I hate the actual act of painting, I don’t mind picking the colors.

marksteve

Designer Steve helped us figure out what paint suited our tastes and complimented our house. Mark would like the rowhouse to have a modern, industrial feel, but we didn’t want just white paint on the walls. We went for a color called “shark.”

It’s more of a cool, gray neutral that Mark loves. I will say that my husband has quite the eye. I think the color is perfect and just what we were going for.

Our next decision was to pick a color for an accent wall in our upstairs hallway. We were going back and forth between orange and blue (I went to Syracuse University but that literally has nothing to do with this choice). We settled on orange.

image

Here’s where it gets tricky. Our exposed brick isn’t red, it’s a pumpkin color. So, we want to compliment that while still making the wall stand out.

We decided to go with a shade called “Indiana Clay.” I feel okay about that because Notre Dame is in Indiana and I’ve always had fun when I’ve gone to ND football games.

And now you have some insight on how we choose our paint colors. If I like the name and can connect it to a fun memory, I’m sold! 🙂

60 is the new 40

60 is the new 40. My parents talk, walk, move, laugh, work and paint as if they were newlyweds and this is their first house.

image

The only difference is when we go home, they fall on the floor and go to bed almost right away. 🙂

Nevertheless, they are a GODSEND during this priming/painting process because guess what…I HATE painting. I try to look like I’m having fun in the pictures.

image

But I am NOT having fun. Mark and my dad like it wayyyyyy more than me. My favorite part is lunch.

image

If you live in Pittsburgh, you know about the Greek food festival that happens every year at the church across from LaRoche College.

image

The food is TO. DIE. FOR. Greek fries aka fries with feta…heaven on earth.

image

After stuffing our faces, we got back to the task at hand…priming the second floor.

image

Mark’s portion requires extra skill because, as you can see, he’s up on a ladder to do it.

image

OSHA would probably not approve of this set up, so please don’t report us. 🙂

A Star and His Buddy

Y’all know that my husband, Mark, is the STAR of this DIY blog. You would think that I (being his wife and all) would be his #1 sidekick. Well, he tosses me to the curb when this guy shows up.

image

Look at them…I swear Mark and my dad are like peas in a pod when working together. We called my dad in because the man could be a professional painter and we need his skills.

image

We first bought our primer from our favorite person, Jonathan. Mark and I never realized there were different kinds of primer for different kinds of walls…a certain primer for drywall, another for plaster of paris, etc…

image

Our primer was for new drywall. Before we could take it home, it had to go into this machine. I have no idea what this is really called but I call it the “automatic shaker.”

image

The machine shook our five-gallon bucket of primer for a good five minutes and then we were ready to go.

image

As we start the priming process, we’re really taking my dad’s lead. He is neat, meticulous and takes his time. The next several blogs will feature his expertise and the bromance between Mark and my dad. Maybe I should take this opportunity to let the two of them finish the house while I get a pedicure?! 🙂
