The Grand House

I Can See Clearly Now!

Because the old windows are gone!!

Our new windows were installed last week and it honestly feels like a completely different house.

My ever-stylish husband decided black windows would be best.

Once again, his eye for design is spot-on. The windows look terrific!

I don’t have a great front shot of the house because we’re still doing some work there…but the big beauty shot is coming in the next few weeks!

Hank the Tank was super jazzed about the new windows.

His excitement only lasted for about 3 minutes because he promptly fell right asleep!

Apparently, our renovations bore him. HA! 🙂

Mark the Mason

Mark can basically do anything a general contractor can do. And in the spirit of the new year and JUST GOING FOR IT, it turns out he is quite the mason as well.

IMG_2008

That’s the old wooden sill on one of the windows in the back bedroom. It has to be the original because it was rotted and gross. Mark removed it along with some of the crumbly bricks underneath.

IMG_2004

Time to rebuild the windowsill.

IMG_2006

My husband’s OCD comes out in full effect with this project…every brick is lined up perfectly. You betta believe Mark spent a good 3 hours just lining those puppies up!

IMG_2007

After it dried, we put the new window in. (Side note…we bought expensive windows for the front of our house and these $150 windows from Home Depot are way easier to install and work a heck of a lot better.)

IMG_2032

We did the same thing to the other window and now you can open and close all of the windows in the back bedroom.

IMG_2038

SUCCESS! 🙂

Moving In

A Window A Weekend

Mark and I have officially become slow pokes.

It’s taken us FOREVER to finish this window project.

IMG_1543

But when your super fun nephews are in town, you’re going to hang with them and put the house stuff on hold! (Uncle Mark looks drunk in this picture but he’s not.)

image

We summoned all the energy and focus we had and were determined to finish! Mark cut and put up the trim.

IMG_1557

He hung out the window all afternoon to finish painting the outside frame.

IMG_1559

Then it was a mad dash to hang the blinds before True Detective came on! (Even though this season totally stinks, we keep watching it hoping it will get better. It doesn’t.)

IMG_1564

The blinds are so good, it’s like we have black-out shades…without that black-out shade price tag. 🙂

IMG_1563

Mark says he miscalculated a piece of trim and it’s 1/8th longer than the other.

I told him to LET. IT. GO.

This window will be the death of me

Weekend #2 with this darn window!!!

image

Who knew trim was sold in such long pieces??

We also picked up a table saw because Mark said we HAD to have one.

image

Just like I HAD to have a new summer wardrobe. 🙂

image

I primed all the wood we’re using. And I’m pretty sure primer comes with a case of Miller Lite…just sayin’.

image

Now it’s off to Red Fin Blues while the primer dries. We’re all about rewarding ourselves these days. 🙂

Rebuilding a window is kinda like building a rocket ship…

It’s really, really hard.

image

We got a bunch of 2x4s and 2x12s and Mark rigged up a jig to rip the wood. (Note: For Christmas, get your husband a table saw)

image

After a lot of sawing & listening to Katy Perry’s “Darkhorse” (it’s like every 3rd song on the radio) Mark roughed in the window frame.

image

My husband is a perfectionist and so this task took an ENTIRE day. Once everything was framed up, Mark put the window in, opened it and the whole thing came crashing down on his hand.

image

During this reenactment and when the window first fell, Mark said a bunch of stuff I cannot put on this blog. But he regained his composure, fixed the window and now our house is whole again.

When it doesn’t fit through the door, take out a window

This was our 2nd attempt to get our shower unit into our Larryville rowhouse.

image

Once my dad carried it from Ross Township to Butler Street (it took him forever!) we got to work.

image

Mark took out the window and the frame because the shower was too wide for the front door.

image

My cousin, Chip, helped hoist it through and then the guys carried to up the steps.

image

It JUST fit through the window, up the staircase and around the hallway.

image

We got it into place and we were very proud!

image

We celebrated this tiny victory at Franktuary

image

Now we just have to rebuild the window.
